Fashion Through The Centuries

We have started to look further into fashions from different era's. We have decided to focus on the periods between the 14th and 18th century.

14th Century

In this era it seems that there were a lot long head dresses worn. We found the colours to be rather neutral such as gold, cream, green and burnt orange.

This is a very typical outfit for the period, it is very covered up and there is very minimal styling to the make up and hair.

This is a more modern day image recreating the look. They have kept in the style of the 14th century and so it is very traditional. We would like to re-create a head piece like this, but add a more modern twist to it.

This image shows us a range of the head dresses worn in the 14th century. This can help with our styling as it will lead to us being able to create a modern take on the draped headwear.

15th Century

Here we found that the hair seemed to be hidden either by platting and twisting the hair at the top of the head and covering with ribbons or a hat.

Here the hair has been twisted to the nape of the neck, this was then twisted up to form a crown shape on the head.

Here the hair has been plaited and then had ribbons tied into the hair to make it secure.
This would be a more successful look to be in-keeping with the theme, we would also be able to modernise this look easily.

16th Century

From the 16th century, we have found that the hair was twisted to the name of the neck, a crown or hat was then applied.

Here you can see how the hair has been parted in the centre and then twisted to the nape of the neck.

Here I have shown a picture of anne boleyn, she also has her hair centrally parted with the hair tucked behind the ear into the headpiece.

17th Century

The styling for this era consisted of large bee-hive hair with large lace ruff's.

The hair is lifted directly off the face and has a huge amount of height in it, creating a very voluminous style.

Here is an example of the 17th century ruff, they are very large and are worn to fit entirely between the large hair and the neckline of there dresses.

18th century

The styling in the 18th century began to become more contemporary wearing more different styled hats and wearing the hair more loosly.

You can see how the hair is being worn down more, the style is still quite voluminous and is mainly curly due to style at the time. Different types and shapes of hats were atrting to be worn at the time and it was the more modern looks of all.
